Q 5) Solve the following : (4 marks each)

1) i) 2 4/5 + 3 5 / 6

 = (5 x 2 +4 )/5 + (6x3 + 5 ) / 6

= 14/5 + 23/6  -----------------------------------------------------equation 1

Find lcm for 5 and 6

2 |  5 , 6

3   | 5 , 3

5    | 5, 1 

     | 1, 1

Therefore LCM = 2 x 3 x 5 = 30

Using lcm in equation 1

14 x 6 /30 + 23 x 5 / 30 = 84/30 + 115/30 = 199/30

ii) 8 1/4  - 2 5/6

(8x4 + 1 )/4 - (2 x 6 + 5) / 6

33/4 - 17/6 -----------------------------------------equation 2

Find LCM:

2 | 4, 6

2   |  2, 3 

3   |  1,  3

     | 1, 1

LCM = 2 x 2 x 3 = 12

Now using LCM in equation 2 we get

99 /12 - 34/12 = 65/12

2) Sheela pays Rs 7500 as rent for 3 months. How much does she has to pay for whole year, if the rent per month remains the same.

Solution: Sheela pays Rs. 7500 ======= 3 months

Therefore rent              ?===============1 month

Cross multiply we get

7500 / 3 = 2500 rent for 1 month

Now for 12 months the rent is 2500 x 12 = 30,000

here also we have cross multiplied

1 month ====== Rs. 2500

12 months =======?

? x 1 = 2500 x 12 = 30,000

3) Solve the equations

i) 2x + 50 = 70

2x = 70 -50

2x = 20

x = 20/2 = 10

x = 10

ii) 5y -2 = 23

5y = 23 + 2 = 25

5y = 25

y = 25 /5 = 5

y = 5
