Solving Roman Numerals Sums
I | V | X | L | C | D | M |
1 | 5 | 10 | 50 | 100 | 500 | 1000 |
Rules:
1) Multiples of 5 ie V, L, and D are never repeated.
2) Other symbols are not repeated more than 3 times.
3) Writing symbol to the left of greater symbol means subtraction and writing to the right means addition
4) V, L and D are never subtracted
RULE 1: Always ADD First to obtain Roman Numeral from standard number. If the addition does not work after considering rules mentioned above then you SUBTRACT. """"Subtraction is always in the multiple of 10's""""""""""".
NOTE: Roman Numerals are not used any more. Digital and Computer Technology is based on 0 and 1's. So too much stress in learning this concept is not needed.
1) SUM 1: 79
50 + 29 = 79--------------------------------------------Always start with addition. If addition does not work then use subtraction
L + (XXIX)
LXXI X is the answer for 79.
2) SUM 2: 85
50 + 30 + 5 = 85 -----------------------------------------Always start with addition.
L + XXX + V
LXXXV is the Answer for 85.
3) SUM 3: 96
50 + 40 + 6 = 96 --------------------but in 40 you will have four XXXX so it is against the rule.
Since addition will not work then use subtraction. But even in subtraction you have subtract in multiple of 10's.
100 - (10) + 6 = 96
XCVI is the Answer for 96
Here we could not use 100 -4 = 96 = IVC. This is wrong, because you are not subtracting in multiple of 10's.
4) SUM 4: 456
100+100+100+100+50+6 = will not work as 100 is repeated four times. So we subtract.
So,
500 - 100 + 50 + 6 = CDLVI --------------------------------here subtraction is in multiple of 10's i.e. 100.
5) SUM 5: 966
1000 - 100 + 50 + 10 + 6 = CMLXVI
